IF you want to go into the market and “win money” you already have the wrong attitude. Investing is the product of Research and long term strategy. Go down to Las Vegas or AC if you want to gamble, If you want to invest, read a few books on the subject and Decide which style of investing has the best risk/reward for your tolerance. I happen to be a long term dividend investor

Don’t waste your money on penny stocks. They are a sham and controlled for the most part. Regardless of what stocks you buy, make sure you have a trading strategy, know your entry and exit price, know why you are buying any particular stock. You don’t buy and “hope” a stock goes up.

Penny stocks that explode are not legitimate. They’re just going to fall back down again after the pumpers go away. There is no such thing as the next big thing, because everyone else would be making money too. You have to be lucky… Believe me, I learned this lesson the hard way.

If you have small amounts of cash is it better to use it on penny stocks or options?

You _can_ learn options by buying a book, this can get started learning about options. However in my opinion to get a better all round idea of how to trade options in the market you will need mentoring (formal or informal). This can be expensive but I think you will make back the cost of course just by learning risk management and strategies for using options according to the market conditions.
One company that comes to mind is Optionetics. Go to their website, there is plenty of free information there to get you started. They are not the only company doing this so suggest you look around and due your due diligence on them.
IMO I think options are better then the pennies. You trade some the best companies with options, limit the risk or make really good money.
I started using options with $ 3.5K and built from there.

Well, I don’t know of a site specifically, but…
If you go into the finance section of Yahoo!, you can go to the portfolios, search for stocks, add them to your portfolio, and see how you would do.
In there, you would need to go to the performance screen to see the total value of your stocks.

Ok, so as a new investor I made the typical big mistake of investing in a penny stock on the OTC market. I had bought a couple hundred dollars of the stock a few weeks back (.18 cents) and at some point it had gone up but I decided to hold it. Then two days ago the stock fell to just above it’s all time low of .10 cents. The stock had been performing consistently above the low for awhile and the news was good so I decided to buy more. A lot more. More than I can afford to lose. Now the last two days the stock has fallen 20% below what I bought at even though all the news reports on the company are good! I don’t know why it is falling and I can’t sell what I have. What are my options? Can I sell even at 50% of the current price? How can I find buyers? Or am I screwed??
Well I’m not going to disclose the ticker for obvious reasons (Ask me after I’ve sold). But my question is whether I should keep lowering my sell price until it sells?How can I recover as much as my money as possible?

ohh man that stinks, i been there a few times before in the past, at least you learned a lesson stay away from the OTC market, so illiquid and easly manipulated, i’d sell what you got, at least sell half your position, theres always buyers out there, even if you forced to sell on the bid not the ask, whats the ticker?

It’s certainly possible but rare. Most fail, or stay penny stocks. Here’s a few though:
In early 1985, Apco Argentina (APAGF) traded for 1/8 by 3/8. The stock has since split 4-for-1 (last November) so it was even less than that. It’s now worth about $ 27 a share,
Ok, here’s a better one. Mylan Labs (MYL) was going for 75 cents a share in 1976. Since then it’s split 11 times (one 5-for-4, four 2-for-1 and six 3-for-2) for a total of 227.8125 for 1. Which means that adjusted for splits, the stock was going for less than one-third of a penny per share. The stock is now going for $ 13.72 which is about half what it was five years ago. Still, it’s a nice 400,000% return for its low.
CNQR – Traded at $ 0.3 sometime back in Apr 2001 and is now the darling of the street as an extremely successful Saas company trading at over $ 47.
Hansen Natural was trading in below $ 1 in early 1996. It wasn’t until July 2003 that it reliably stayed above $ 5 a share. The next five years is widely chronicled – July 2003’s price is a split adjusted $ 0.64 to $ 28.59
